Fisher & Pykel

In the midst of the pandemic this year, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare opened The Daniell Building, a state-of-the-art $100m +, 53,000 sqm facility located at its East Tamaki site in Auckland.

This impressive building, designed by Warren and Mahoney Architects and built by Leighs Construction features breakout and meeting space to support 700 staff in an open plan environment, over 4000 sqm of manufacturing space, laboratories and cafeterias, and a dedicated distribution centre to supply Fisher & Paykel Healthcare’s global market.

100% New Zealand owned installer, OCL Telecommunications was tasked with delivering vital and extensive data connectivity to the site, including installation of over 4700 CAT6 data outlets, construction of several HUB rooms and the installation and termination of over 672 cores of fibre tie cables.

Offering total end-to-end low voltage services; from cabling, WiFi and access control to security and CCTV - OCL are no strangers to projects of this scale. With a team of in-house specialists, including the country’s largest data cabling team, OCL have worked on many significant and complex projects including; Mt Eden Remand Prison, Auckland’s Park Hyatt Hotel, and 227 and 309 Broadway for Westfield.

LCS³ - AN END-TO-END STRUCTURED CABLING SOLUTION

After a comprehensive competitive tender, OCL selected Legrand’s innovative structured data cabling solution LCS³ for installation into FPH’s Daniell building. OCL’s Business Development Manager, Titus Brothers, comments “We were impressed with Legrand’s modular system when it was demonstrated to us, as well as its competitive price”.

LCS³’s modular design delivers flexibility and simplicity. As one complete interconnected solution, OCL were able to work with one supplier, one technical point of contact, and be covered by one total warranty.

From aesthetically designed data cabinets, to patented patch panels and modular fibre trays that enable expansion of up to fifty percent in same space allocation, right through to the toolless data jack delivering ease and speed of installation - LCS³ is an end-to-end structured cabling solution.

LOCAL EXPERTISE DELIVERS OPTIMAL OUTCOMES

With over 40 years’ experience in data and telecommunications, Legrand’s National BDM – Data Comms, Rick Gebhardt worked alongside OCL’s Project Manager to adapt Legrand’s solution to meet the exact requirements of the project - right down to the colour of the cables.

With architecturally designed open ceilings featuring on many areas of the building, the usual yellow CAT6A Legrand cable was not suitable. Gebhardt explains, “After talking to their client, OCL let us know that they didn’t want the yellow CAT6A cable. They wanted it in blue! No problems, whatever colour you want, we can do it”.

The change was quickly made, and all of the CAT6A cable supplied for the job was specially manufactured in blue to meet the building’s design. Titus adds, “Our Project Manager worked closely with Rick and the Legrand team and any issues with the design team were handled as a team and quickly resolved.”.

EASE OF INSTALLATION, FLEXIBLE TO SUIT APPLICATION

On a project of this size, ease of installation is integral. LCS³’s Patented Toolless Data Jack enables a perfect connection in a few seconds, guaranteeing the optimum performance of the link from the patch panel to the workstation.

The easily removable individual cassettes, and fibre trays enable unrestricted access to back end of patch panel, with minimal disruption to existing connections and the innovative click-in feature allows entire trays to be easily slotted in and out of place without the need for cumbersome lock nuts.

Titus comments, “The LCS³ patch panels having the sliding cassettes with access to the jacks allowed us to repair any faults quickly”. He adds, “The zone distribution boxes were a great solution for the underfloor cabling 0-337-96 and the ability to use 48x copper ports per 1RU it makes it high density. You can also mix the panels to suit application including housing fibre & copper on the same RU”.

FUTURE-PROOFED PERFORMANCE THROUGH INNOVATION

Despite the project being completed in September this year, OCL remains involved onsite, completing work and maintenance throughout the Fisher and Paykel Healthcare campus.

The Daniell Building itself, was designed with spaces that could flex and evolve as Fisher & Paykel Healthcare’s needs change. LCS³ ‘s modular design can easily adapt to the changing needs on site – expanding up to fifty percent within the same space to meet the increased demands of the physical layer to support the company’s culture of continuous improvement.
